Sub-Saharan Africa alone had 420 million unique subscribers in 2016, a penetration rate of 43%. According to projections, this rate will reach 50% in 2020, with 535 million subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa and 725 million for the whole continent. Africa will then become the world's second largest market in terms of number of users. At this rate, communications have exploded in recent years. The number of SIM card connections reached 772 million in 2016 and is expected to exceed one billion by 2020. Growth for all of Africa has been 344% in ten years. At the same time, the number of connections in the rest of the world rose from 3.2 to 6.6 billion, an increase of only 107%.
