Sub-Saharan Africa will be the engine of urban growth around the world. Africa is the least urbanized continent on the planet, home to 11.3% of the world's urban population, and the sub-Saharan region is the least urbanized on the continent. However, the cities of the region are expanding rapidly. According to United Nations forecasts, Africa will overtake Asia as the world's fastest urbanizing region by 2025 (UN 2014). In the next 20 years, the continent's total population will exceed the combined population of Europe and the Americas. By 2050, Nigeria alone will contribute to the growth of the total world population by almost 10%. Although the nature and speed of urbanization vary from country to country, Africa is in a phase of massive urban transition, with more than a quarter of its fastest growing cities in the world
